I suppose it also kind of sort of maybe just a little bit let me network with a bunch of people at a bunch of events and that those people are how I ended up getting to work where I wanted, how I got several job offers, and who I leverage/go to when I want to do freelance work. Not to mention it allowed me to focus on actually enhancing my overall skill set without being burdened by doing only what clients wanted.
I guess it’s not entirely bad, but it was definitely too expensive.

Here’s a project with a tight deadline. We believe in you; we’re a team and we can get it done!
We see that with the deadline and the amount of time you’ve estimated, we’ll need to put some more people on this project. We’ll try and put X and Y on it. They’ll rely upon you to lead them as they have less experience than you do.
We’ve had to put W and V on the project instead. We’re also making W the lead on the project even though W doesn’t have as much experience as you. Please make sure you give W any and all help he requires.
Clearly, W is not up to par with this technology. We need you to pick up the slack. You’re now responsible for twice as much work as W is on this project. You’ll need to put in extra hours in order to cover it all, but we’ll give you a 1:1 return in vacation time.
Excellent! Thank you for putting in so many extra hours, including while you were sick. We’re now 3 days ahead of schedule, which is huge given this tight deadline. Unfortunately, the client just called and said that they’ve reduced the amount of time we have and that we need to support another language.
This is only the second week on this project. There are maybe three weeks left? I don’t foresee anything but more time being spent on it.
